CHICAGO FIRE PORT

The Chicago Fire Port was designed as a fire station and public outreach space at Navy Pier and the mouth of the Chicago River. The program combined residential, mission critical, and commercial space to make a functional product. Its prominent location demanded a sculptural design.

This design is inspired by the unique location. The building appears to be in motion with pointed roof planes that suggest rotation. The structure celebrates the unique condition of the site between the lapping waves of Lake Michigan and the flowing current of the Chicago River. This dynamic also illustrates the rapid nature of a firefighter’s career, and stands as an icon of the presence and dedication of first responders.

The design accommodates the interior storage of one large firefighting vessel, and includes living quarters, community space, an outdoor amphitheater, and a soccer field for activity.
