37-93 LIBRARY
Named for its location’s longitude and latitude in Springfield, MO, this library design was intended to blend with its surroundings. The theoretical site bordered the South Creek and featured a sustained slope over the majority of the site with considerably dense tree coverage throughout. Most striking about this design is its large, glass volumes suspended in a reflective, copper-colored metal panel façade with minimal glazing.
This design uses layering, transparency, and reflectivity to communicate its story. Much like its surroundings, this design has a massiveness hanging overhead as tree-cover does. The lower portion of the building visually fades and allows only small amounts of light through, just as the space below a tree receives a filtered light quality. The materiality of the building is intentionally simple, suggesting basically two qualities: transparent or reflective.
